About the project
BUALA is an online website where reflection, criticism and documentation of contemporary African culture can be found. It’s an ongoing work since 2010 with the aid of an international net of contributors helping to compile the biggest cultural topics from an open point of view of a post-colonial Africa: www.buala.org.
For 2013, all Buala team will be working on a specific theme for the first time, without giving up on the work that has led us here. We’ve decided to think about the BODY in order to make an edition on paper.
For this new challenge we need your cooperation.
To think about the body is a strategic requirement, a way to discuss the normative processes of exclusion, naturalization and production, setting new ways to be in the world, new affections, to expand the horizon of the reasoning about the body. The idea is to insist less in the identity politics nor the identity pretensions (and its deceiver subversion) and more on precariousness and the way it deals with difference as well as the way the contemporary maps of power are exploited.
As a result of the collective work put together we will be publishing an edition updating the subject.
To start the project, every three month we will be working on four areas related to the BODY. The results will be permanently updated on the website.
1. Life and death;2. Excluded bodies (sexuality, class, cultural differences, diseases, age, and disablement);
3. Space and dynamics (urbanism and migration);
4. Poetics and technology.
A selection of the articles will be published on the printed version of «BUALA – the BODY in review». The edition should be out at the end of 2013, featuring 54 pages, 16 unpublished articles (4 articles x 4 subthemes), Portuguese and English versions + 4 production/works by four contemporary artists.
We believe on the publication of critical awareness tools, that people should practice thought sharing, and the resistance to discuss stereotype and identity fixing.
In order to keep our independent and vastly spread editorial line we need the cooperation. You only have to donate to our crowd funding at Massivemove platform. Our aim is to attain the necessary funds for such project, allowing us to pay any collaboration:
_Editing and translation;
_Design and graphic work (for online and printed versions);
_Printing.
It’s an ambitious but necessary goal to give credit to the people that make it all happen and whoever believes in the relevance of this platform.
You are all invited to add something to the project «BUALA – the BODY in review», so that it can be accomplished. Any donor, individual or collective, will be rewarded with copies of the printed edition, free access to articles and BUALA initiatives, published in all our means of communication, especially on our web page and social networks.
We’re began our activities on Africa Day, the 25th of May, 2010, with the support of Casa das Áfricas (São Paulo, Brasil) and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisboa, Portugal). It was with the support of such foundations that we’re enabled to go online, here: www.buala.org.

About the entrepreneur
BUALA means home, village, meeting point.
We’re online since 2010, with the support of Casa das Áfricas (São Paulo, Brasil) and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisboa, Portugal), there are more than 800 articles to be found on the website from different contributors (with French and English versions), 18 galleries of contemporary artists and over 2500 posts on our blog Dá Fala, alone.
We’ve got 266.500 visitors, and counting (from 180 different countries), and 4749 followers on our Facebook profile.
In addition to our contributors we’ve a permanent team, composed of:
Marta Lança: post-graduate in Comparative Literature and Editing on FCSH – Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Freelancer: editor, translator and journalist. She lived in Cape-Verde, Mozambique, Angola and Brazil, working in several cultural projects. She’s currently working on the documentary series “On the path of naturalists: the botany missions in Africa.”
Francisca Bagulho: post-graduate in African Studies no ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Freelancer: producer. She’s lived in Angola (2004-2007), working in Luanda’s 1st Triennial and the 52nd Venice Biennial at the African Pavilion. She’s currently working as producer for several African artists.
Candela Varas: Documentary filmmaker and researcher. Manager of cooperation projects in Sahara. She’s a degree on African Studies and is also a member of the Center for Advanced Studies in Leipzig. She’s worked as a teacher in Cape-Verde. She’s currently finishing her documentary “Souvenirs”.

Viva amigos do Brasil, Portugal, Angola, Cabo Verde, Moçambique e tantos lugares onde o Buala acontece!
Estamos nos últimos dias de campanha de crowdfunding (FALTAM 13 DIAS) que se destina a fazer uma reflexão alargada sobre o corpo durante todo o ano de 2013, da qual resultarão muitos trabalhos no site e uma publicação em papel. O dinheiro servirá para cobrir a produção desta publicação.

É preciso lembrar que o BUALA é uma estrutura sem financiamento e por isso estamos fazendo esta campanha de financiamento directo. Queremos dar o salto para editar materiais BUALA fora do site, então estamos a angariar contribuições para poder pagar o processo de edição, tradução, paginação e impressão, desta publicação sobre o CORPO!
